Statistical game by one of the genre's much acclaimed designer.

Based on a professional ten pin bowling league that was existed at the time in America (maybe it still exists, I don't know).

As usual with these games, dice are thrown and the result cross-checked against various charts and tables. Each match is resolved quickly so a season can be replayed in a relatively short time.
